SC Rep James Clyburn caught up in ethics
probe Edgefielddaily.com web posted May 4, 2005 SC Rep James Clyburn (D) has been caught up in the House Ethics probe into Republican House Leader Tom Delay. At issue is the lobbying firm that paid for travel for two Delay staffers also paid for a trip for area Representative James Clyburn to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in 1997. The trip, which was paid for by the lobbyist Jack Abramoff or his firm, was never repaid. Clyburn’s trip is reported by the Associated Press as costing $4823.00. Clyburn is quoted as saying he’d never heard of Abramoff and said he was under the impression the trip was paid for by a non-profit group and supplied a letter stating so. “That’s all I know about it,” he told the AP. The republican leadership in the House claims the call for an ethics investigation of Delay by minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D) are hypocritical because Delay never took the trips, only his staffers, and no calls are being made to investigate democrats, like Clyburn, who have far more questionable trips and other activities. Pelosi said in an ABC interview Sunday with George Stephanopoulos, "Do not fall into a Republican trap of equating technicalities on reporting, timing of reporting with not upholding an ethical standard of the House." Republicans say that shows Pelosi is playing politics not actually seeking any attempts to actually rid the House of ethics violations. Pelosi has also come under fire for ethics reporting as well.
