  OpinionChairman Monroe Kneece: “You lie” A Column by the Editor web posted November 13, 2009 COLUMN – The Edgefield County Council, in tried and true fashion, will subvert the normal procedures just to get their way on the Calliham property purchase. They will be holding a Special Called meeting this coming Tuesday to hold a second reading on the ordinance. And to make it even more appealing to the public, it will be held at 2:30 in the afternoon. As the “church lady” would say, “Well, isn’t that special”. I am sure everybody will just take off work to attend that meeting. The sad part is the majority, entrenched in the “this is the way we’ve always done it” mode (which can be translated into doing “as we are told”) really don’t care that the ordinance they are passing is faulty in expressing the true cost of the purchase and required work. They know fully what the cost to the taxpayers will be as a result of the purchase because they have the same numbers in front of them that I have in front of me. A skill that I have and they don’t poses is I did commercial and residential estimations for over a decade. The ordinance states a cost of $625,745.51, however when looking at the numbers provided by the architectural firm they hired to do the estimations they show an initial cost of $892,810.63, not including the future costs of remodeling the remaining 9,000 square feet of the building which rings in at a total price tag of $1.7 million. Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham, who also is president of Edgefield Construction, stated the cost would not cost the taxpayer “one dime” and estimated the cost at $40 a square foot. Well, the professionals proved that to be false as well. Their numbers coincide with my projected numbers, not his. But they listen to him, not the professionals. That’s a big surprise. Chairman Kneece stated when the numbers were released that he did not like the costs and stated they were too high. Obviously, they do not care. Like their fellow Democrats pushing socialized healthcare in Washington against the will of the people, our Democrat majority of the county council will lie to buy and not ask why. True, they will hold a “public hearing” so the public can stand and voice their opinions pro or con. They did the same with the forced zoning in Merriwether. Hundreds of citizens stood in the Edgefield County Courthouse and yelled a collective “No” yet the majority ignored them and voted yes. County Councilman Norman Dorn has stated in meetings he does not have to listen to the people he represents, he’s elected to do what he decides. So it will be with the Calliham fiasco. The very deal County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece once declared was “as dead as it gets” saw a surprise vote at the next meeting being voted on to buy. Chairman Kneece, as Joe Wilson correctly said to President Obama, “You lie”. Not only that, but you lied to my face before lying to the public. There are three types of people I despise and the first one on the list is a liar. Truth be known, he doesn't care. His boss has told him how to vote and that has been confired to the two other 20 year veterans well trained in doing what they are told. © Copyright 2009
