Edgefield County School Board Could Blow Expansion and Successful Head Coach in 1-2 Punch

A Column by the Editor
web posted February 18, 2012

COLUMN – As the final decision of upgrading the football stadium continues, rumors have now begun to grow that due to a less than friendly school board meeting on February 14 to the idea, and the negative comments towards the sports program by certain school board members, Coach Sawyer has been said to have inserted his name among the list of Athletic Director hopefuls at Batesburg Leesville High School allegedly halting their search and them making an offer to Sawyer on Friday for the job.

Edgefield Daily is not able to confirm any of these rumors, but an impromptu "pep rally" was staged on Friday at Strom Thurmond with students, players, teachers, administrators, and even School Board Member Chris Hoffmann and Interim Superintendent singing Sawyers praises and the contribution he has made to the sports programs at the school in an effort to convince Sawyer to stay.

Edgefield Daily's Sports Editor Tim Crane is having similar difficulty in confirming information on the record. The Citizens News Publisher Mike Rosier also expressed a similar frustration on the growing situation saying no one is talking on the record.

While Tim Crane will continue his contacts on the sports side, as Editor I will continue to seek comments from School Board members, who are scheduled for an executive session meeting on February 17, in regards to the choice of a new Superintendent. A call for comment to BOE member Chris Hoffmann was not returned by press time.

According to late breaking information, Batesburg Leesville has placed an offer on the table for Sawyer. Meanwhile a divided majority of the school board seems to be languishing in indecision.

With the roller coaster of events that have taken place in the last 18-months of the school district, what is really going on may take months to sort out. Sawyer may not have that kind of time to wait to make his decision.
