Norman Dorn - Don't Go Away Angry, Just Go Away

A Column by the Editor
web posted June 12, 2014

COLUMN It was a perfect storm in local politics Tuesday that saw a dream of mine come true, District 1 County Councilman Norman Dorn being rejected in massive form by voters. It was not just Democrat voters who have finally grown weary of his racial insinuations (sometimes outright claims), obstructionism, antagonistic and caustic attacks on his fellow council members, to say enough is enough, but also Republicans who crossed over party lines to hand a resounding victory to Albert Talbert.

Talbert, who was at the County Council Chambers as the vote totals were being announced, was congratulated on his victory by Edgefield County Council Vice-chair Genia Blackwell. Blackwell recalled Councilman-elect Talbert telling her he looked forward to working with her on council. That was refreshing news, as Dorn has never worked with anyone on council unless they are black.

He never greeted white citizens who attend county meetings, just the blacks. He openly has been part of the NAACP and the "progressive wing" of the local Democrat Party pushing the mantra of voting black in the primary whether the candidate was qualified or not, what mattered was skin color. This was reiterated at a Democrat Party meeting in Edgefield this spring.

Well voters, both white and black, voted for a man with integrity, reason, and one who seeks to unite and not divide the people of this county or that district along racial lines. Albert Talbert was their man - but not because he was black - because he was a man of integrity and well earned respect by all.

Norman Dorn is a washed up radical race-baiter whose days of having a platform to spew his hateful, and at times incomprehensible, rants about race during council meetings is over. He was useless as a member of council and always on the losing end of votes because no one wanted to work with him. He was a bully, and an ignorant one at that.

So Norman, you have been beaten (badly) in a three-way race that all thought would go to a run-off. But your hate and race-baiting caught up to you once and for all. No one is happier than I.

As the old saying goes, don't go away angry, just go away. Do the county a favor and don't bother coming to any more council meetings. Your input is not needed or listened to, your votes are meaningless, and the embarrassment you have brought to your district and the county has come to an end.

Maybe District 1 might actually get something done now that they have a real representative, Albert Talbert.
