What I Did on My Summer Vacation: "Here Bear"

A Column by the Editor
web posted June 25, 2011

COLUMN – Having arrived back home from my only week of vacation available each year (a working vacation nonetheless) and having to deal with upgrades, a lighting strike that took out the main computer systems, and having to take over control from a remote location while on vacation, there is always a bright spot in any situation. Leave it to our 2-year-old granddaughter to provide that levity.

On Sunday our granddaughter was being a bit of a handful so my wife took her out on the upper deck of our condos in Sapphire Valley, NC, to see if she could find a bear to watch. For the next hour young Lacee ran from one side of the deck to the other calling for a bear. "Here bear" and "bear, bear" were repeated much to our amusement, while knowing the chances of a bear coming up to the condos were slimmer than she is tall.

That is until a little later.

Just after 7 pm, and much to our surprise, a bear appeared and put on quite a show for us and our granddaughter - who was thrilled to see her first wild bear in real life.

Our son's girlfriend, Rita, was the first to spot the bear, bringing the whole family out to snap photos as it made its rounds around our cul-de-sac, starting at our condos.

Now, I'm not saying that the pleas from a 2-year-old brought the bear to the location, but the timing could not have been better. And the bear could not have been more friendly to pose for numerous pictures during the fifteen to twenty minute event.

The bear was no more afraid of us than we were of him (or her) as we were able to move to within a few yards of each location as it made its rounds through the cul-de-sac.

Though it was not our first encounter with a bear at our summer retreat, it was the first that engaged our granddaughter. That somehow made it very special. To see the look on her face after calling for the bear, and then one appear, was priceless.

Now, if I can get her to call for a strong Republican candidate for President, things might get even brighter.
