Al Sharpton to Claim Strom Thurmond Kinship?

A Column by the Editor
web posted October 18, 2013

COLUMN Is "Rev" Al Sharpton about to come out and claim being a blood relative of Edgefield's Favorite Son, long time Senator Strom Thurmond? According to a phone call received from none other than MSNBC on Thursday, that is exactly what they described. When the producer called she "beat around the bush" about what all the questions were about until I forced the question and she said they were doing a "life story" on Sharpton and he was related to Strom Thurmond.

The producer, whose name I did not catch (phone number saved on caller ID with date and time stamp), began her query with questions about the graveyard at Red Oak Grove Baptist Church in Edgefield and inquired if Edgefield Daily had ever done reports on who was buried there.

As the questions seemed to be too vague to answer it was revealed what the network's intentions were. Of course, Sharpton has his own show on MSNBC and his entire history is littered with false claims and proven lies for decades, so now they are planning to dig back in time to try to make the "Rev" Al related to Strom Thurmond.

No doubt to be used by Sharpton to play his full deck of "race cards" on his show and as an attempt to boost ratings of a show nobody watches.

They wanted to know if I would put them in touch with family members and friends. I refused. They asked did I know about Thurmond's past, I said I did and knew of his bi-racial daughter Essie Mae Washington-Williams long before it was publicly announced to the world after his death in 2003.

Walt Mims, of the formerly well respected Edgefield Advertiser, reported her birth in the early 1970's.

I abruptly ended the call by telling the producer she could find all the information of how to reach the church in our Church Listings page and gave her the number to the Edgefield County Archives, where genealogical records can be found.

She thanked me for being helpful and ended our conversation.

About an hour later I stopped in the County Administration Office to speak with Administrator Lynn Strom and Finance Director Crystal Coleman to tell them about the phone call. It was then I learned that Williams' daughter (Thurmond's bi-racial granddaughter) was currently in the Archives doing research.

It looks like in the very near future we will see MSNBC and Sharpton running the story making the claim. I don't know how they are going to twist things to get there, but I have a bigger story for them.

I am related to Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and, believe it or not, Barrack Obama and Norman Dorn. See, I traced my family history to its very beginning and found that we all share a common family connection.

Adam and Eve.

They have my number so I am awaiting the calls for national media interviews. Oh, the stories I could tell about my crazy family members who hit it big.

The good news about Sharpton making his claim is it will be on MSNBC, which nobody watches. But, of course, the liberal "mainstream media" will promote Sharpton and give him carte blanc to make more wild and baseless claims.
