Happy 29th Anniversary to My Lovely Bride

A Column by the Editor
web posted October 27, 2012

COLUMN – It was a September day in 1977 that I will never forget. As I walked the old commons area at Strom Thurmond there was a new face on the campus. School had already started a week or so before, and there before me was the most beautiful young woman I ever laid eyes upon. It was my future bride. So overtaken by her beauty and not even knowing her name, I walked up to her and told her I was going to marry her. She thought I was nuts, but six years later we were wed.

Some say that love at first sight is not real. I beg to differ. I knew the moment I saw her that there was no one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with except her.

It took some time for her to agree to even go out on a date. But I was persistent and persistence pays off. Today they may call what I did stalking.

I tried several times to get her to secretly marry me while we were in high school, but she refused. So on the night she graduated in 1981 I proposed to her and she accepted.

Two years later I became the luckiest man in the world and married the woman of my dreams.

It is now 29 year later, thirty five if you count the years of trying to convince her to marry me, and I have never regretted a single minute of our time together. Through thick and thin she has been what I always dreamed of and more.

We have three wonderful children, now grown, and one beautiful granddaughter and a wonderful son-in-law.

Genia has risen to national recognition in her professional position, risen further as an executive, and then selflessly gave herself to serve the people of Edgefield County and her home district of Merriwether to serve as Vice-chair on the Edgefield County Council.

It is for that reason that I have closed Edgefield Daily this weekend as we celebrate our 29th anniversary.

The business community, the county and residents of Merriwether have her undivided attention every day. This weekend I want to have that for myself. And she deserves the same from me.

Happy anniversary to my loving bride.
