Norman Dorn - Stop Embarrassing Edgefield County

A Column by the Editor
web posted December 6, 2012

COLUMN – It was fortunate that the December County Council meeting was not well attended due to District 1 County Councilman Norman's repeated performances of stupidity while hurling insults to fellow council members and members of the voting public. It was unfortunate that Dorn had to do his best to disrupt a meeting that was set to honor his fellow Democrat on the council, Willie Bright, for his 22 years of service. Obviously Dorn does not know anything about respect.

So, I will take Norman Dorn's approach in discussing his uselessness as a member of the county council. No respect, however; in this case Dorn has not earned nor deserves any respect to start with.

In my opinion, Norman Dorn is nothing but a loud mouthed bigot with the IQ of a rusty nail. He is an embarrassment to this county year after year. That hurts our county when business leaders attend council meetings, such as Bondex who is making a $6.4 million investment in the county and adding new jobs, to hear ignorant Norman Dorn rant and rave against the vote for a fee agreement (more revenue for the county) because of the defunct Northside Park.

Dorn stated early on that his rants were going to be pervasive in all coming meetings, and most will be based on the Northside Park or directed at the three white members of the county council. Of course, they are racist, not him.

Even a simple Resolution thanking Ambassador Cooper and his wife for their contribution of four acres of land to the county had to be hi-jacked by Dorn. I would have been embarrassed even more if they had been present at the meeting if that was possible.

However, in spite of Dorn's outrageous behavior; it is the responsibility of the Chairman to maintain order in the meeting. That responsibility lies squarely on the back of Dean Campbell. He has the gavel and never uses it. I give him credit for finally getting tired enough of Dorn Tuesday night to shut him down telling him no one wanted to hear his ranting. Three times is a charm I suppose.

Councilman Rodney Ashcraft had to practically force Chairman Campbell to act on his repeated parliamentary call for a point of order in Dorn's first wild ranting early on in the meeting.

Chairman Campbell needs to understand he is dealing with someone who has the mentality of a 4-year-old. A child, and when that child is unruly he needs to be corrected and, if necessary, punished. If Dorn needs to be removed from the meeting for disorderly conduct and disrupting the proceedings, so be it.
