Alien Popcorn Heads

web posted October 1, 2006

Ingredients:

15 or 20 small tootsie rolls
4 qrts. popped popcorn
2 tsp. water
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
6 drops green food coloring
1 cup light corn syrup
1 cup confectioners sugar
1 tbsp. water
1 tsp. light corn syrup
2 drops green food coloring

Roll and shape tootsie rolls to resemble eyes, nostrils and mouths for 12 alien heads. Set aside. Place popcorn in a lrg. greased bowl. Set aside. In a small bowl, combine water, baking soda, vanilla and green food coloring. Set aside. In a heavy saucepan, combine corn syrup and butter. Cook over med. heat until butter is melted. Add sugar. Cook and stir until sugar is dissolved and mixture comes to a boil. Cook, without stirring, until a candy thermometer reaches 235 degrees. (soft ball stage), about 2 mins. Remove from heat. Stir in reserved vanilla mixture. (Mixture will foam). Immediately pour over popcorn, stirring to coat evenly. Cool about 5 mins. stirring several times. When cool enough to handle, firmly shape, with buttered hands, into 4-inch long, teardrop shaped alien heads. Place on wax-paper. Combine confectioners sugar, water, corn syrup and food coloring until smooth. Place icing mixture into a resealable plastic baggie. Cut a small hole in one corner of baggie. Pipe icing onto popcorn heads to attach/glue alien eyes, mouths and nostrils. Let stand until dry. Wrap in plastic wrap and seal. Yields 1 dozen.

(Tip: It's best that you test your candy thermometer before each use by bringing water to a boil. The thermometer should read 212 degrees. Adjust your recipe temperature up or down, based on your test).
