Smothered Hamburger Steaks web posted April 23, 2007 Ingredients: 2 lbs. lean ground beef or ground chuck 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1 med. onion,chopped fine 1/2 cup fine bread crumbs 1 lrg. egg. 1/2 cup shortening In a lrg.mixing bowl,combine beef, salt, pepper, onion, bread crumbs and egg. Mix and shape into lrg. oval patties. 2 or 3 to the lb. and about 3/4-inch thick. Place shortening in a lrg. heavy skillet over med. heat. When hot, fry 2 or 3 steaks at a time for 5 or 6 mins. or unil med.-well done. Turn often. Remove to a baking dish. Using the drippings in the skillet make brown onion gravy. Add butter if needed. Pour gravy over steaks. Cover tight with foil. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake for 30 mins. Serve in baking dish. Makes 4 to 6 steaks. For
