Edgefield County Council Addresses Several Issues at Tuesday Night Meeting

web posted January 5, 2012

EDGEFIELD – In addition to the reported approval of Lynn Strom taking over as County Administrator in March and the Animal Shelter, the County Council received a "State of Economic Development" address from Will Williams of the Economic Development Partnership and addressed five other agenda items.

Mr. Williams said that Edgefield County is currently being looked at by industries and possible expansions by existing industries due to the "positive light" that is being exhibited by the county leadership. "You should be commended for that," Williams said.

The Strategic Plan committee and the work they are doing is also being viewed well by those outside of the county since it is directed by the county council with a drive to make the recommendations actionable. He also noted that Edgefield County has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state and the prospect of new jobs bodes well for the county.

Councilman Rodney Ashcraft asked how the county compared to other counties our size. Mr. Williams said that to prospective industries he would place Edgefield County on the level of much larger counties. Vice-chairwoman Genia Blackwell asked what the county was doing right, "and what can we do better?"

Mr. Williams said that the county seems to be moving in the right direction. "There is a level of positive energy coming from this group (members of council)," and that is attracting more attention and offered no suggestions on doing anything more than what the county is doing already.

In other business that county council approved the appointment of Tonya King to the Planning Commission to represent District three (Chairman Dean Campbell's appointment).

They also approved setting the speed limit on Timberland Lane at 15 mph. Residents present at the meeting supported the speed limit due to the curves and hills on the county gravel road.

Council also approved an extension of the Fire Service Contract with the Ridge Spring Fire Department to cover certain portions of Edgefield County until June of 2012. Administrator Roger LeDuc said that all fire contracts will be up for approval by June and this will place Ridge Spring on the same timeline for contracts as other fire departments.

Also up for discussion was a lease agreement with the Catholic Church for use of their parking lot located across the street from the county council chambers. The last contract expired in May of 2001 and it is still being used by those attending the county council meetings. The last agreement paid the church $600 yearly for the use and the county agreed to the maintenance of the parking area.

Since the lease expired, the parking lot, paved by the county, is in need of repair. During negotiations the church has asked for $6,000 upfront and $1,200 a year plus maintenance of the parking area for a five year lease.

No vote was taken on the matter and the general feeling of the county council was for Administrator LeDuc to give a counter offer to agree to repair and seal coat the parking area, re-stripe parking spots and pay the same $600 a year fee.
