Assessor's Office comes under fire again: Chairman Kneece admits; "there’s problems there" web posted February 7, 2007 COUNTY – The Edgefield County Council heard yet another complaint of the recent reassessment and problems with the Assessor’s Office, their findings, and the inability of taxpayers to get information or have their concerns handled in a competent way. Mr. Glen Whitlock addressed the county council concerning three tracts of adjoining properties he owns and not being contacted by the Assessor as promised. “I think if this is the kind of service they give out of Edgefield County then we’re in bad shape,” Mr. Whitlock said. Mr. Whitlock said he appealed the assessment on two properties but only received confirmation of one. He said the three properties, all adjoining were appraised at different values per acre. An 88 acre tract was set at $1,400 an acre, the bordering property, a 5 acre tract was valued at $4,500 an acre, and his third adjoining property valued at $5,100 an acre. Mr. Whitlock said someone just bought property next to his three tracts and they paid $1,500 an acre and he has been questioning the discrepancy in the assessments to no avail. “I apologize for the (assessor’s) office, there’s problems there, and Mr. Pettigrew will take care of it,” Chairman Kneece said. Like many others, Mr. Whitlock complained that phone calls were not being returned and the Assessor is always in “a meeting” or unavailable. Administrator Pettigrew said there were hundreds of appeals being handled and he would meet with Mr. Whitlock to assure his concerns were taken care of. Mr. Whitlock also complained that he was informed he could not take the three tracts and combine them into one tract so he would receive just one tax bill. “I’ve never heard tell of such as that,” Whitlock said. “You can do it,” Chairman Kneece said, “we have done it before. I don’t know where that information came from.” Mr. Whitlock said the information came from the Assessor’s Office. The appeals of Assessor Keisha Bryant’s finding will be held by the Appeals Board beginning in March Administrator Pettigrew said. For
