County cuts funding for Heritage Corridor, Heritage Jubilee, United Way
211 system
web
posted March 19, 2008
EDGEFIELD – With the budget debate ongoing
there were some rather large losers. Among them were the Heritage
Corridor, the Heritage Jubilee, and the United Way 211 system.
Councilman Kitchens said though he agreed to cut the funding for the
211 system he would be interested in looking into it further and
perhaps bring it back up at a later date.
The Heritage Corridor has been funded with $10,000 a year for the last
three years. This year the group asked for $20,000. It was decided that
the county had fulfilled their promise of funding for three years and
was not interested in continuing it.
The same held true for the Heritage Jubilee. In the past the county had
donated $1,500 a year. Chairman Kneece said the funding was provided
until the festival was “on it’s feet” and he felt it was doing just
fine.
Piedmont Tech was also discussed saying the county had met the
three-year funding agreement with them as well. The school had asked
for an increase in funding and the council said they would not increase
the funding and would have to look at providing anything more than what
had been honored in the past. The matter would be addressed at the next
work session.
The 211 system pitched recently to the county was asking for $10,000
and the United Way would match the funding to implement the call
resource center by “piggy-backing” on Aiken County’s 211 system.
Councilman Kitchens said he was interested in the program and that he
felt the three local towns needed to provide some of the funding. The
funding was removed and was still under consideration.
