County Council Chairman Kneece denies closing date set for Calliham
property
web
posted March 31, 2008
EDGEFIELD – An entry in last week’s The
Edgefield Advertiser’s “Around the Square” listing has raised some
eyebrows and brought a flood of emails to EdgefieldDaily.com. In the
column entry, J. P. Calliham was speaking of his 56 years in business
and what changes in products he would be making for the spring with the
writer. Then he dropped the proverbial bombshell on the sale of the
property to the County. “They have done the appraisals, inspections and
environmental checks, and we close on June 4,” if all goes well, the
quote reads.
Not so fast said County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece Friday, the
matter has not been brought before the county council for discussions.
Open meeting discussions must take place before any decision can be
made about a closing, or if the sale would even move forward.
Kneece stated that he has no idea what the full council would decide to
do and that there have not been any discussions on the matter and no
closing date. The only information he was aware of, he said, was that
the option on the property had been extended. Mr. Kneece insisted that
nothing had been discussed about the possible building and property
purchase.
The matter will be on the agenda at the April 1 county council meeting.
If approved on a first reading, the sale could be set for a June 4
closing with second and final readings in May and June. The June County
Council meeting is June 2. A required Public Hearing would be held just
prior to beginning either the May or the June meeting.
The purchase was brought to the public’s attention back in a January 10
column by the editor. A press conference followed within days with
County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece, County Administrator John
Pettigrew Jr., and the local media which can be found
here.
If the sale goes forward the former Senior Citizen’s Building on Church
Street, destroyed
by fire in July of last year, would remain barren property with no
plans to rebuild.
