County Council rules Calliham property purchase as a "dead" issue

web posted April 8, 2009
EDGEFIELD – A much anticipated purchase by the county of the J. P. Calliham property fell to the wayside Tuesday night as the Edgefield County Council emerged from an executive session to declare that the county would not seek to make an offer on the property. Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham, who presented a packet explaining how the purchase would benefit the county, was vocally disappointed. Durham, who is also president of Edgefield Construction which presented the plans for renovations, asked if there would be a reconsideration of the purchase. Chairman Kneece stated the issue was “dead”.

Mayor Durham asked if there was an option for the county to make counter offers in the negotiations which led Chairman Kneece to state that there were several options offered and the county was refusing all of them. Kneece stated that, speaking for himself and not the county council, did not see the benefit of purchasing the property and creating a debt for taxpayers and then expending funds to remodel an existing building when the county could build “everything we need” on property the county already owns.

“I understand you’re looking out for the town (of Edgefield),” Chairman Kneece said, “but I’m looking out for the county.”

Mayor Durham said being in the construction business that he would advise against the county looking into a pre-engineered metal building as they will bring about almost certain leak issues in the roofing. Chairman Kneece stated he owns a similar building and has not seen any such problems in decades.

Chairman Kneece told Mayor Durham he may be disappointed in the decision but that they would have to respectfully disagree. Mayor Durham said he understood.
