Edgefield County Council July meeting web posted July 4, 2007 EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Council held their regular monthly meeting Tuesday night with a short agenda and no ordinances. After the approval of the minutes of the previous meeting and review of reports Chairman Kneece directed the council’s attention to bids that have been submitted to construct a walk-in cooler for the Edgefield County Coroner. The lowest bid was by Best Food Equipment Company out of Martinez, Georgia, Coroner Thurmond Burnett said, “Plus they have other customers in the area.” Councilman Willie Bright asked if the bid was for everything involved in the construction. Mr. Burnett said the bid included everything but the cement pad which would come from other approved funds at a cost of $1,750. The county council approved the bid of $12,561 for the construction of the cooler which will be attached to the Emergency Room at the Edgefield County Hospital The county council also heard a report from Edgefield County Hospital Administrator Ray Price. Mr. Price stated the hospital was on solid ground with 89 days of funding on hand. However, an increase in health insurance rose 9%, which Mr. Price called "substantial". Mr. Price said that several surgeons were coming to the hospital including a cardiac care which would save local residents from having to travel to Augusta to have tests performed. Mr. Price added at the end of his presentation that rural community hospitals such as Edgefield's were "at risk" of closing but that he has never seen a community support their local hospital the way Edgefield County does. Next on the agenda was consideration of two leased county vehicles, a 2004 Impala and a 2005 Colorado 4x4 truck. Taken separately the council voted to break the lease on the Impala and begin a new lease at a lower cost on a 2007 model and purchase the 2005 truck. Mrs. Jennifer Fleming addressed the county council concerning complaints surrounding the Force One testing facility located in northern Edgefield County. Mrs. Fleming expressed several concerns to the council including a .50 caliber round that struck the roof of a neighbor. Chairman Kneece said the full council would like time to look into the matter and possible solutions to the situation. Under the Administrator’s Report John Pettigrew said that the cost of the insurance for county employees would rise 9.7% beginning in January of 2008. The county has also received a Department of Commerce grant to supply an accesses road for Trenton Plastics, who are expanding their operation, from S.E. Diggs Road in Trenton. With no other business the meeting was adjourned. For
