County Council to honor Citizens aiding end of crime spree

web posted August 4, 2009
COUNTY – The Edgefield County Council will be honoring Philip Bell and Jamie Tyler for their help in ending a rash of burglaries that plagued the Merriwether and Edgefield County area for several months earlier this year at tonight’s Edgefield County Council meeting. Two Resolutions will be passed and presented to both men for their contributions in the apprehension of Robert Webber on June 3 during a burglary on Republican Road that ended the crime spree that saw almost $250,000 worth of property stolen.

Mr. Bell was the caller that tipped the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office of a suspicious car pulling in and out of driveways along Republican Road as he carried his wife her lunch at Republican Baptist Church.

A deputy, working an overtime shift in the area due to the rash of burglaries arrived on the scene within minutes and confronted Webber in the commission of his last alleged burglary. He fled the scene on foot and was chased by the deputy who then called for additional units and the manhunt began.

Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputies, Johnston and Edgefield Police Officers, North Augusta Public Safety, Aiken County Deputies, and even a helicopter from SLED converged on the area in an effort to prevent Webber’s escape.

As the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Bloodhound Team chased Webber from the woods, he crossed into the yard of Mr. Tyler who, while armed, confronted Webber and assisted in Deputies taking him into custody.

As EdgefieldDaily.com later reported, Webber was allegedly working in concert with Martin Jarrett, who took his life after a five-hour standoff with Aiken and Columbia County Deputies on June 26 after they tried to serve arrest warrants at his home in Bath SC.

Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigators have linked the pair to thirteen burglaries in the surrounding area.

Anyone wishing to show their appreciation to Mr. Bell, Mr. Tyler, and the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office is welcomed to attend the meeting of the County Council tonight at 215 Jeter Street at the corner of Railroad Street (just behind the Courthouse) at 6 pm.
