Edgefield County Council does about face on rezoning in Merriwether
over objections from Merriwether representative
web
posted August 5, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Consideration of rezoning of
two parcels of property in Merriwether owned by Hagler Systems defeated
last month was given new life when county councilman Norman Dorn made
the motion to reconsider the vote which failed on a 3-2 vote. Dorn, who
appeared to be the “go to guy” for everything reconsidered at the
August meeting, brought the matter back up and he and councilman Willie
Bright made the motions to call for a vote which was interrupted for
discussion by Merriwether Councilwoman Genia Blackwell calling for
discussion. “This is my district,” Blackwell said.
Councilwoman Blackwell said that the previously defeated ordinance was
in favor of what her constituents relayed to her they wanted. “I
visited with Mr. Hagler and I do like his establishment, I think he is
a fine person. However, the people in my district have reached out to
me, I’ve had several, several contacts from people, and they do not
want this rezoning.”
Councilwoman Blackwell said that in her conversations with those in the
affected area led to her vote to reject the first ordinance. “Zoning
was a very hot issue in Merriwether when it was passed nine years ago,
and we’re opening a Pandora’s Box.” Blackwell added rather forcefully,
“I think this is a mistake.” Councilman Rodney Ashcraft stated, “I’d
have to agree.”
In spite of the feelings of county council representatives from the
area involved in the matter objecting to the passage, Chairman Monroe
Kneece called for a vote to pass the reading which passed on a 3-2 vote
with Blackwell and Ashcraft voting no.
Councilwoman Blackwell said after the meeting that she was "disturbed"
that the rest of the council did not consider the wishes of her
constituents regarding the rezoning.
The rezoning will have to have two more reading and a public hearing
before it can be finalized.
