County Auditor reveals tax rates for coming year

web posted October 7, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Auditor Bill Gilchrist presented the county council with the proposed millage rates for the coming year tax bills. The overall millage rate increased by 9.59 mills with 9.3 mills being directly related to increases in the School District millage rate which the county council has no control. “They pretty much set their own millage rate,” Gilchrist said. The County millage rate increases a mere .29 mills. The total rate on the tax bills will be 322.11 mills. Roughly a $38.36 increase on a home valued at $100,000.

Mr. Gilchrist said the sales tax credit would bring a personal home taxes down by $33.20 making the actual increase only $5.16. Businesses and second homes would be hardest hit since they do not receive to tax credits and are taxes at 6%. “They’re the ones who are going to get hit the hardest,” Gilchrist said.

According to the information provided the millage rate breaks down as follows:

County Operations           73.4.0
County Debt Service          5.24
Industrial Development       0.83
Recreation                        1.50
EMS                               11.40
Hospital Operations            6.5
Fire District                       10.0

School District millage:
School Operations           188.74
School Bonds                     24.5

Total millage rate for Edgefield County: 322.11

The value of a mill increased this year to $69,672 on the revenue side.
