County Auditor reveals tax rates for coming year

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Auditor Bill
Gilchrist presented the county council with the proposed millage rates
for the coming year tax bills. The overall millage rate increased by
9.59 mills with 9.3 mills being directly related to increases in the
School District millage rate which the county council has no control.
“They pretty much set their own millage rate,” Gilchrist said. The
County millage rate increases a mere .29 mills. The total rate on the
tax bills will be 322.11 mills. Roughly a $38.36 increase on a home
valued at $100,000.
Mr. Gilchrist said the sales tax credit would bring a personal home
taxes down by $33.20 making the actual increase only $5.16. Businesses
and second homes would be hardest hit since they do not receive to tax
credits and are taxes at 6%. “They’re the ones who are going to get hit
the hardest,” Gilchrist said.
