County Council approves additional deputies after grant rejection

web posted October 10, 2007
COUNTY – Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey did not receive the four additional deputies sought under a Transportation grant, so the Edgefield County Council voted to add two additional deputies at last week’s monthly meeting. Sheriff Dobey said, “I am thankful they saw the need and gave me two deputies.” County Administrator John Pettigrew said the additional deputies would not increase the current budget.

In order for the Sheriff’s Office to write for the grant the county had to agree to the matching funds for four deputies. “Under the matching funds (10% for the first year) there was enough to hire two (deputies) outright,” Pettigrew said.

Finance Director Lynn Strom provided the budgeted funds showing, under the grant proposal, the county set aside a total of $134,728 to pay and outfit the four deputies, including new patrol cars. Providing that the two additional deputies are hired on or after November 1 the total cost for salaries, patrol cars, and uniforms totaled $123,698 leaving $11,030 in the budget.

Sheriff Dobey said he is presently trying to hire the additional deputies and looking into, “how to best utilize them.” The most likely scenario, he said, is to use them to work on “mini shifts”. “These are high crime hours,” Sheriff Dobey said. The deputies would also be used to, “service the backlog of civil and warrant service.”

The Sheriff’s Office has already received applications for the positions.
