Top Stories of 2013: The Year in Review

COUNTY Edgefield Daily has compiled a list of the most read news stories for 2013 ranging from murder, plane crashes, finding explosives in the front yard to a teacher's aid arrested for drugs and weapon charges. Even in a year the county saw no fatalities, a driver survives a 100 foot plunge after leaving the roadway, proving miracles do exist. That can also be said of Wesley Spires, a Westside Fireman, who was beaten nearly to death only to survive as well.

Johnston Man Dead, Girlfriend in Custody

JOHNSTON A 25-year-old Johnston man is dead and his live-in girlfriend is in custody, Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said. The reported shooting stems from a 911 call of a disturbance at the home on the 200 block of Lanier Road just after 11 am Friday.

Bank Funds Set Up for Wesley Spires after Brutal Attack

AUGUSTA Wesley Spires, 27, of the Merriwether/Westside area of Edgefield County, and Ashley Solesbee 25, of Belvedere have officially been identified as victims in the brutal and senseless attack on Riverwalk in Augusta on Friday night. Very little information has been provided on Solesbee, however; Spires remains in very critical condition at the MCG Trauma Center with severe head injuries and bleeding on the brain. Two donation accounts have been set up to support the Spires family to help with medical bills. [Editor's note: Two men have been charged with the attack and are awaiting trial]

Big-Rig Driver Takes Police, Cows on Wild Ride

JOHNSTON Johnston Police and Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies were alerted Tuesday night around 7 pm that a State Trooper was trying to stop an 18-wheeler after a hit and run incident in Saluda County. One source stated there were injuries involved in the collision. The Trooper advised the truck was on Highway 121 heading towards Johnston at a high rate of speed and was in the wrong lane. Two deputies spotted the truck going 82 mph in a 35 mph zone near Ridge Road driving in the middle of the road, forcing the deputies off the road, sending one into a guardrail.

Driver Survives 100' Plunge in Chevy Truck

NORTHSIDE Chevrolet's motto for their trucks is, "Built Like a Rock", and it can be used in at least two descriptions of a horrific crash on Highway 25 north at the Turkey Creek Bridge Tuesday morning. The driver of a four-door Chevy truck struck the guardrail and went airborne before plummeting 100 feet to the creek bed below. He managed to crawl out of what was left of the truck and sat on the grass waiting on emergency personnel to arrive.

Merriwether Man Digs up Explosives

MERRIWETHER A Stevens Creek Drive man was working on a waterline in his front yard Saturday morning when he hit a metal box while digging. He dug the box up an found it to be a military ammo box. When he opened the box he found it contained military grade explosives and detonation cord. He moved the box away from his home and called 911 to report the find. Edgefield County Deputies, Merriwether Fire Department and EMA responded to the scene.

Plane Crashes in Trenton, Pilot Uninjured

TRENTON For the second time in a week a plane has crashed in Trenton. The pilot in this crash was able to exit the crashed plane on his own power and was shaken up but not seriously hurt. According to information provided on the scene, the pilot was leaving from Trenton when his engine quit and he was trying to circle back towards the airport and tried to make it to a nearby field as he was losing altitude.

Naked Man Who Abandoned Baby on Busy Roadway Has Criminal Past

MERRIWETHER Carl Thompson Grove, 31, who abandoned his naked baby daughter on the side of busy Martintown Road last Wednesday evening, while himself walking around naked, may be facing additional time in jail. According to online court records, Grove was arrested in July of 2009 on Briggs Road for multiple felony drug charges and pled guilty to manufacturing and distribution of a cocaine based drug and sentenced to 15 years in prison, suspended on service of 5 years of probation in 2011.

Details of Douglas Elementary Teacher's Aide Arrest Released

AUGUSTA New information on the arrest of Douglas Elementary Teacher's Aide Nelson Dorn was released on Tuesday morning and shows the large quantity of drugs Dorn had in his possession at the time of the arrest. It also describes the weapon he had in his possession as 9mm High Point pistol that was found in the glove box along with some of the drugs. Richmond County Sheriff's Investigators had been tipped about Dorn carrying drugs.

Burglary Suspects Chased Through Three Counties

MERRIWETHER A Woodlawn Road woman called 911 Tuesday morning around 7 am to report two unknown men trying to break into the family home. Her husband had left for work just 20 minutes earlier. Sheriff's Dispatchers quickly notified two Sheriff's Deputies who were just minutes from the home and advised of an active burglary. The woman, who is expecting their baby any day, stayed on the phone with dispatchers providing information as deputies raced to the scene.

Herndon Not Guilty of Murder

EDGEFIELD The 4-day trial of John David Herndon for the murder of Mark Meadows ended with the jury finding Herndon not guilty of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime. The verdict came as a shock to some court observers and the Edgefield Police Department due to the physical evidence and the testimony of Herndon's then girlfriend saying Herndon told her prior to the stabbing he intended to kill Meadows.
