Hard Freeze Coming - Get Prepared

web posted January 6, 2014

COUNTY Edgefield County will see some of the coldest temperatures in two years tonight and tomorrow night with lows in the lower teens. Temperatures will drop to 12 degrees with a wind chill of 0 overnight. And things won't look any better for Tuesday with a high still below freezing. Protect your pets, water lines and automobiles in order to avoid major problems.

Before retiring tonight, turn outside spigots to a drip to prevent frozen water pipes. Check all exposed waterlines and insulate as needed. Bathrooms with plumbing on an exterior wall are also in need of attention. Sink or tub faucets located opposite of an outside wall should also be turned on to a drip for extra protection.

Make sure your automobiles have sufficient antifreeze in your radiator. If in doubt, take them to your local mechanic to be winterized. Such low temperatures may also affect your car's battery. Make sure your battery has a full charge.

Pets should be brought inside if possible. If not possible, be sure to provide warm bedding and protection from the wind. An incandescent light bulb placed in a bedding area will also provide warmth for pets kept outside or in an enclosure.

Temperatures will rise by Thursday into the low 50's.
