Local churches targeted for thefts

web posted January 15, 2007

COUNTY – Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigators and Deputies were busy Saturday investigating at least two thefts at area churches. Chief Investigator Randy Doran said Saturday evening that an unknown person or persons went to the churches and broke into the air conditioning units and cut away all the copper tubing.

The names of the churches were not released but one was located across from Winn Road and the other was on Garrett Road. Investigator Doran said they were able to obtain a fair amount of evidence in the two cases that may help identify the culprits.

Both of the churches have active congregations.

It is unknown if more churches were hit over the weekend or when the actual thefts took place. “We know one church hadn’t been checked on since Wednesday,” Investigator Doran said and suggested church members keep a close eye on their home church in case the thieves continue hitting churches. “We just want them (church members) to be aware of what’s going on,” he said.

No dollar amount of damages were given.
