Number of churches hit by thefts climbs to eight

web posted January 19, 2007

COUNTY – Three more churches have been discovered to have their commercial air conditioning units dismantled and the copper tubing removed. This brings the total of churches hit across the county to eight since the thefts began last Saturday. One church was struck shortly after a deputy checked it during patrol. Deputies are checking all county churches during all shifts.

The Union Grove Baptist Church in Trenton was discovered around 4pm to have been the first theft discovered on Thursday. A deputy did a patrol check of the church at 2:30pm. Around 4pm the pastor arrived to discover the theft. A total of three units were dismantled, one which reportedly cost $15,000 when installed.

As the day continued two other churches were found by deputies. The Mt. Canaan Baptist Church on Highway 25 near Trenton and the Mealing Grove Baptist Church on Murrah Road in Merriwether both suffered similar losses.

Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said they are collecting evidence at each crime scene in an effort to identify the culprit.

The copper tubing taken from the churches is worth between $15 and $20 when sold as scrap, but the cost of the damage done rises into the tens of thousands of dollars. Investigator Doran said copper is bringing between $0.70 a pound up to $1.30.

The culprit is committing the crimes in just a matter of minutes at the churches, estimated to be about 5 minutes per unit.
