Sheriff offers advice, seeks citizen help in rash of church thefts web posted January 24, 2007 COUNTY – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release Tuesday on the recent thefts from area churches. – Local Churches in Edgefield County have been hit by thefts over the past week. The culprit or culprits are taking away the copper tubing that is found in commercial air conditioning units. The churches that the thefts occurred are; Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Highway 25 south; Piney Grove Baptist Church on Garrett Road, Red Oak Grove Baptist Church, Highway 23 west; Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church on Steeple Road Johnston; Coleman Ridge Baptist Church in Johnston; Union Baptist Church, Trenton; Mt. Canaan Baptist Church Murrah Road. Total damages for all eight churches are estimated to be around $30,000. Copper tubing is being sold at $.90 to $1.30 per pound. Sheriff Dobey said, “We are continuously following leads. If anyone has information on these crimes, do not hesitate to contact the Sheriff’s Office. We ask that all citizens pay close attention to suspicious activity in your neighborhood during the day and especially at night around homes, businesses, schools, and churches. For an example, a vehicle that is parked several yards from the possible theft location with the appearance of being stranded. Please call law enforcement immediately. Try to get some type of description whether it is a vehicle , an individual or a tag number.” Sheriff Dobey feels if someone’s morals are so low to steal from a church, then there is a great safety concern for the community.
