Church thefts continue web posted January 27, 2007 COUNTY – The rash of church thefts that began in Edgefield County has now spread across area counties including Aiken and Bamberg Counties in South Carolina and some similar crimes in Richmond County in Georgia. Since the crime spree began over twenty churches have been hit with at least $60,000 in damages left behind. The amount of copper stolen is estimated to have netted the culprit or culprits around $400 as scrap metal. The week following EdgefieldDaily.com reporting the eight local incidents the thefts started in Aiken County with a total of seven churches hit within days. From there the thefts began to appear in Bamberg County and as of Thursday similar thefts were reported in Jackson S.C. Sheriff’ Chief Investigator Randy Doran said the crimes seem to be related and area agencies were comparing evidence collected in the cases. Sheriff Adell Dobey said last week that investigators were following up on several leads in the cases. Patrols are still being stepped up in the county and residents are asked to pay special attention to suspicious vehicles at churches, businesses, or schools. The person or persons responsible could have a background or current connection to heating and air conditioning service related fields.
