Wintry weather forecast includes Edgefield County, sleet or freezing rain predicted

web posted January 31, 2007

COUNTY – Edgefield County may be facing a second bout with wintry weather this year as a low pressure cell moves up the coast tomorrow and temperatures continue to be in the mid to low 20’s overnight. Local forecasters are calling for a 100% chance of precipitation beginning late Wednesday night and continuing throughout the day Thursday. Freezing rain and sleet are forecast beginning in the early morning hours and is expected to continue until noon when temperatures are expected to rise above freezing.

Just two weeks ago school openings were delayed two hours with a similar forecast on January 18. There have been no formal releases from the district office on the most recent predictions of winter weather.

Presently there are no forecasts available on any appreciable accumulations but due to the recent cold temperatures ground temperatures are lower and could contribute to localized problems. Bridges and overpasses are more likely to see accumulations of ice and extreme caution should be used while driving on the exposed roadways.

The freezing precipitation is expected to turn to cold rain by early afternoon depending on elevation and local temperatures. Edgefield, McCormick, Greenwood, Aiken, and Saluda Counties in South Carolina are in the predicted path of the highest chance of the early morning freezing rain. All counties in the Central Savannah River Area are expected to receive some freezing precipitation during the 24-hour period.

As always, EdgefieldDaily.com will provide updates on any school closings or delays within five minutes of their release to us beginning at 6 am any day a weather related event is predicted.
