Earthquake Reported: 10:25 PM

web posted February 14, 2014

Last Updated: 12:43 am 2/15/14
COUNTY An Earthquake was reported in all of Edgefield County at 10:25 pm Friday. In the Merriwether area people reported things falling off shelves and the prolonged sound of an explosion. Firemen and police report it being felt from every corner of the county and "shook the entire house".

Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies are patrolling to check for any damages.

According to radio traffic the quake was felt well beyond the tri-county area and extends nearly statewide. At this time it is too early to know where the epicenter was located. However, the Edgefield County area was considered "very strong" compared to tremors that taken place now and then in the area over the years.

Update: It was said to be a 4.4 magnitude quake. Edgefield County is now reported as the epicenter, with a location of 7 miles west of Edgefield. That location would be roughly the intersection of Highway 23 west and Martintown Road (Hwy 230) where the Westside Fire Department is located.

There are reports of damages, but it is not thought to be serious at this time. It is expected that once day breaks and people inspect their property more closely additional damage will be reported.

Edgefield Daily will continue to follow up with additional information as it is released.
