Heavy rains, flooding, and high winds create problems overnight

web posted March 2, 2007

COUNTY – Around midnight the Merriwether, Westside, and southern parts of Edgefield were hit with a series of storms producing very heavy rain and high winds downing trees across roadways and blowing debris elsewhere. Shortly before 1 am reports came in of a large tree blocking Martintown Road about three miles west of Sportsman's Corner. Shortly afterwards another tree was reported down on Currytown Road about a half mile from Martintown. An Edgefield County Ambulance was also caught in a washout on Star Road with the road being underwater and "washing away"

One person in the ambulance was slightly injured when the ambulance hit a washed out section of the roadway, early reports indicate.  A single car crash was reported on Briggs Road during the same time period. Several reports of "standing water" were also reported across the area due to the large amount of rainfall. By 2 am additional reports of trees down and additional roads being underwater in Edgefield came in such as Church, Bausket, Mims Streets and others. Road crews from the Department of Transportation were notified to set up barricades to warn drivers and clear downed trees.

There were also sporadic power interruptions or outages attributed to the storms including the traffic lights at the intersection of Highway 25 and 19 in Trenton being out due to an outage.

The weather is expected to begin clearing in the afternoon with a small chance of rain.
