Severe weather causes damage, power outages
web
posted March 5, 2008
COUNTY – The threat of severe weather on
Tuesday held up to its end of the forecast as high winds, hail, and
heavy rain hit the county late in the day causing power outages, trees
down, and damaged homes as storms moved across the county. Shortly
after 7:30 pm reports of power outages began coming in around Edgefield
including the E-911 dispatch center. Trees were reported down on
Sweetwater Road where a passing motorist struck a tree falling in the
road near Miller’s Store, a tree down on Currytown Road, and a home
suffering extensive damage on Watson Road.
Deputies responding to a collision on Highway 25 south reported hail
and had to slow their response as the high winds and heavy rain lowered
visibility. In that crash the driver of the vehicle possibly
responsible for the crash, described as a Hispanic male wearing a Mouth
Vintage grounds crew uniform, was seen fleeing the scene. Deputies were
unable to locate the man but were able to establish his identity.
A report to EdgefieldDaily.com from a resident of Watson Road said a
possible tornado touched down splintering a large tree in the front
yard of a home, tearing shingles from the roof, destroying a shed and
moving another as well as other debris scattered in the area. “There’s
at least $20,000 worth of damage to the house,” the man said.
The storms also knocked out power around Edgefield and a fire was
reported under a tree near the Highway 25 bypass bringing fire crews to
the scene.
The fast moving storms exited the area shortly after 8:30 pm leaving
widespread damage in their wake. No injuries were reported. The South
Carolina Highway Patrol was also reported being overwhelmed with
crashes and debris in the roadways during the weather event.
