United Way of Edgefield County’s 211 Help Line Makes Impact
web
posted March 9, 2009
COUNTY – In its first five months of
operation, the Edgefield County 211 Help Line has proven to be an
important and used resource by Edgefield County citizens. From Oct. 1,
2008, when the Help Line was established, through Feb. 28, the 211 Call
Center has received 234 calls from Edgefield County citizens.
The top two needs requested by callers: assistance with utility bill
payments (151 calls) and rent payment assistance (47 calls). In
the first five months, the top non-profit referrals from the 211 Help
Line: the Salvation Army, Edgefield County Churches Helping Others and
GLEAMNS.
“This program is proving to be a lifeline for many people,” said Dean
Campbell, Chairman of the United Way of Edgefield County. The
local United Way sponsors the Help Line. “It’s easy to remember,
easy to call and easy to get information citizens need.”
Demographics show that most of the callers during the first five months
were ages 18-39 (122 calls). Also, most calls came from Edgefield
(84 calls), followed by Johnston (76 calls) and Trenton (48 calls).
The 211 Help Line is a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week phone number that an
Edgefield County resident can dial (from a land line or cell phone) and
get instant answers on where to go locally for help with health issues,
housing assistance, educational challenges, food, shelter, suicide
prevention, crisis counseling or other needs.
Campbell said the Help Line is free to all users, confidential and
greatly improves the quality of life for many citizens who need help
but don’t know where to look.
“Without 2-1-1, citizens who need help must rely on calling office
after office, person after person, including churches, housing
authorities, health resources, elected officials, and so on, which can
lead to frustration. They get transferred again and again, if
they don’t get the right agency or person the first time,” he
said. “In other words, they have to know exactly where to call to
get needed help, and many citizens don’t know where to look. Help
Line 211 solves that problem.”
