Firemen stay busy Tuesday afternoon
web
posted March 10, 2010
COUNTY – Edgefield,
Westside, Trenton and
Johnston Fire Departments had a full day with brush fires and a stove
fire. Westside and Edgefield Firefighters fought the same fire twice
after a noon brush fire on the 2700 block of Highway 23 West rekindled
into a blaze and began advancing towards a nearby home.
The initial fire began after the homeowners emptied out hot coals from
the fireplace in a nearby field. Dry and windy conditions helped the
smoldering ashes touch off the fire that began spreading quickly
consuming a large fiberglass satellite dish, a pile of discarded
shingle, and numerous other items store in the field.
The fire crews were called back at 4 pm after the fire ignited again.
As the Westside and
Edgefield Fire Departments were called back to the
fire, Trenton firemen were called to a brush fire behind the former
Martin Color-Fi plant. It is unknown at this time what touched off that
fire.
Within minutes, the Johnston Fire Department was called to a stove fire
in an apartment at the Park Avenue Apartment complex. The fire in the
two-story complex did not spread and fire crews made sure the initial
fire was out and cleared the smoke from the apartment. The amount of
damage done in the fire was not available to this writing.
In the past week, the various fire departments have fought several
brush fires and outdoor burning, until conditions improve, is not
advisable.
Showers that are expected in the area today and heavier rain on
Thursday should give local fire departments a reprieve from the brush
fires.
