Hospice Care of S.C. supports grieving kids
web
posted March 18, 2009
COUNTY – Each and
every one of us
grieve in a different way. Some withdraw, while others reach out. But
what goes through the mind and heart of a child at such a time? It was
exactly this sort of question and mission - helping children handle
loss - which led to the founding of Katherine's Camp in 2006 as a
community outreach effort by Hospice Care of South Carolina. The camp
was named in memory of a little girl who passed away from leukemia at
age 4.
The organization's regional office in Edgefield helped with this year's
camp - held at the Ripley's Aquarium in Myrtle Beach earlier this month
- by providing each child (some 50 or so from all parts of the state,
including one local student from Douglas elementary) with a monogrammed
towel for them to keep.
The campers met other kids going through similar situations, played
games, learned art therapy, kept a journal, received grief counseling
and even spent the night in the aquarium's "shark tunnel".
Regional Hospice Care of S.C. offices around the state reached out to
school counselors in their area to locate kids, ages 7 and above, who
might be dealing with a loss within the last six months to two years.
Laurie Robinson is the Community Relations Director in Edgefield, and
she says that it didn't take long to find a local child who needed just
the kind of help the camp offered.
"I spoke with the counselor at Douglas (Elementary) and she knew right
off of a child who had lost his mother," she said. "There was a lot
that he was having to deal with at just 7 or 8 years-old."
In addition to the counseling and fun, each child and their parents
received other gifts as well.
Some regional offices filled bags with goodies, while others brought
T-Shirts. Robinson and the Edgefield office brought each child a
stitched towel.
Susan Williams volunteered to stich the towels, which read "Katherine's
Camp 2009".
Mrs. Williams stitched a total of 56 towels for the campers.
"This was a big gift for the camp put together by Laurie and the
Edgefield office," said Jennifer Pooley, Hospice Care of S.C.'s
Director of Volunteers and Communication. "We're very grateful for
their support."
Children at the camp also participated in a memorial service and a
ballon release.
Pooley said that the response to the grief camp has prompted the
scheduling of another camp for later this year to be held at another
location in the state. The cost for the camps is $40, but camp
scholarships are available. Robinson said they do not want money to be
something that keeps kids away.
"We want this to be available to all of the children in our area," she
added. Contact Jennifer Pooley at (864) 641-8227 or by e-mail at
jenniferp@hospicecare.net. for more information on Katherine's Camp or
other camps sponsored by Hospice Care of South Carolina.
