Over $7,500 in Guns, Jewelry, Cash Stolen in Recent Burglaries

web posted March 18, 2014

COUNTY Two more burglaries have been reported, one in Merriwether and another near Johnston, with more than $7,500 in property and cash stolen over a three day period. The first was reported on Hardly Place near Johnston and was discovered when the owner came home and found a jewelry box laying on the floor in the bedroom.

The man asked his girlfriend is she had moved the jewelry box and she stated no. Upon further investigation he found that two .380 Hi-Point pistols, a gold chain and $3,500 in cash was missing from his bedroom.

No serial numbers were provided in an incident report released on Monday. According to the report, no forced entry was found at the scene.

The second burglary was discovered on Saturday when a Freeland Drive man returned home and discovered the family home had been broken into and the screen porch had the screen cut to help gain access to the home.

Once inside the home, the person or persons stole a 1940 .22 long rifle (SN# 137595) a 30-06 Remington model 742 Springfield rifle (SN# B7331388) with a 3x9x50mm Leupold scope, a Benelli Diamond semi-automatic 12 gauge shotgun (SN# BF14254) and a Benelli Diamond semi-automatic 20 gauge shotgun (SN#  HH19932).

All of the guns were taken from a gun cabinet and were valued at a total of $3,230. Damages to the home were estimated to be around $200.

Both cases have been turned over to the Sheriff's Criminal Investigative Division for further investigation. Reports did not state if evidence was gathered at either crime scene.
