 EMA warns of scammers targeting tornado victims web posted March 21, 2008 COUNTY – Emergency Management Director Mike Casey said scammers have been reported in the areas affected by last weekend’s tornados and citizens should be wary of some of those offering to help. Among the reported scams is offering tarps to cover damaged property at a highly inflated cost of $350 or offering to cut a tree for $1,800. “That is price-gouging,” Mr. Casey said adding that tarps can be obtained for free from the state’s Emergency Management Department or by contacting the Edgefield County Emergency Management Office at 637-4106. Anyone that is approached by individuals offering these or similar scams are asked to contact the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office at 803-637-5337 at once. ©
