Arrests may end rash of recent thefts
web
posted March 25, 2008
COUNTY – A recent rash of larcenies and
burglaries over the weekend has resulted in the arrest of two men
Sunday morning. The arrests came after two white males were spotted in
a white truck in the back yard of a Silver Fox Circle home around 3:15
am and the homeowner reported going outside to try to stop the two men
as they fled the scene. The men reportedly had been inside an
outbuilding on the property.
Deputies were able to spot a white truck matching the description a
short distance away on Sweetwater Road and turned around to conduct a
traffic stop without success. The truck was then spotted at the S&S
Truck Stop on Highway 25 at the end of Sweetwater Road. Aiken County
Deputies were notified of the situation and also responded to the
location.
When deputies approached the truck the two white men fled the truck and
ran inside the truck stop. Chance Garrett Smith, 20, of Royal Place
Drive was found hiding in the bathroom. The second suspect, Eddie
Smith, 19, of Murphy Street, was found hiding in the kitchen.
The homeowner arrived at the location a short time later and identified
the truck and the two men as being the ones he spotted in his yard.
Both men were arrested at that time and transported to the Edgefield
County Detention Center. During the booking process each man said the
other left a small bag of crack cocaine in the patrol car. A small
baggie containing what police describe as being consistent with crack
cocaine was retrieved from a location in the car as the men described.
A custody order for possible charges of trespassing, attempted
burglary, and possession of crack cocaine were placed on both men.
Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said the pair may face
additional charges stemming from another burglary that took place in
the early hours of Friday morning when a white male in a white truck
was observed pulling up to a storage shed on the 1100 block of Stephens
Road and loading items in the truck before fleeing the area.
Tire tracks were able to be photographed as evidence in that crime.
Two other thefts were reported in the general vicinity the night
before. The first found two tires and wheels taken off of a 1987
Cutlass from a car on Jacob McKie Road, and a second report found two
tires and wheels removed from a Oldsmobile on the nearby 100 block of
Community Road.
Investigator Doran said they are investigating to see if the crimes are
related.
Mr. Smith was the focus of a recent report
when he ran from deputies
when they attempted to serve a bench warrant for his arrest in January.
Smith, reports indicated, ran into a tree while fleeing arrest.
