County’s illegal alien problem continues to grow
web
posted March 27, 2008
COUNTY – The ongoing problem with illegal
Hispanics in the Edgefield County area is, well, ongoing and is getting
worse instead of better. Just since the first of this year there have
been a growing number of incidents of Hispanic males being arrested for
no driver’s licenses, DUI’s, fraudulent Social Security cards, and
identity theft among others.
From January 1 – March 23 of 2008 there have been arrests for the
following crimes by Hispanic males:
No driver’s license: 14
DUI: 4
ID fraud: 2
Larceny: 3
Hit and Run: (collision) 1
Open container: (alcohol) 2
Drugs: 1
These totals do not include those who have not been served warrants
that are pending or those charged from last year.
Two of the most recent cases, occurring in Edgefield and in the county,
led to the arrest of four individuals. On Saturday morning an Edgefield
Police Officer running radar on Buncombe Street just after 8 am clocked
Juan Sanchez Dominguez, 32, driving 51mph in a 35 mph area.
Once the officer conducted a traffic stop Mr. Dominguez was found to
have only a Mexican driver’s license and was taken into custody and his
vehicle towed. It was confirmed he was an illegal alien. He was
released Saturday afternoon on bond.
Shortly after 7 pm on Highway 25 near Macedonia Road a Sheriff’s Deputy
spotted a car crossing the center line and then the right side of the
road and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, Moises Crespo Rea, 33,
presented a Texas ID card and was found to have no driver’s license and
was placed under arrest. He was released on Sunday.
Rea’s two passengers, Joel Senati Martinez, 31, presented a Tennessee
ID card and a forged Social Security Card and had a warrant for his
arrest in Tennessee for identity theft. He was placed under arrest and
is currently being held for deportation.
Pedro Ixcotoyac Mejia, 27, also presented a forged Social Security Card
with the name “scratched out” and a forged Resident Alien Card. He is
also currently being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center
awaiting deportation.
Sadly, non-violent offenders are transported to Atlanta where they are
given a date for a deportation hearing and released, only to never be
seen again.
On Wednesday afternoon Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a hit and run
collision on Highway 25 near Bettis Academy involving a tractor-trailer
and a four door white car occupied by three Hispanic males who fled the
scene. It is unknown at this writing if arrests have been made in the
case. It is believed the men may work for a nearby nursery.
In previous interviews with Sheriff’s Adell Dobey and Investigators it
was stated that the county is not able to deport illegal aliens unless
they have committed a felony.
It is estimated that if the county held all illegal aliens identified
it would fill the jail cells of the entire Detention Center in three
months, with nowhere to house hardened criminals.
Being an estimated 4% of the county population, Hispanics make up over
75% of arrests for no driver’s licenses. An unlicensed driver cannot
obtain automobile insurance.
