Non-filing leads to re-election of three county offices, four of five
county council seats up for grabs
web
posted March 31, 2008
COUNTY – With the filings completed, three
county positions are almost certainly assured re-election in November.
Edgefield County Sheriff Adel Dobey will not see a challenger nor will
Edgefield County Clerk of Court Shirley Newby. Edgefield County
Councilman Willie Bright saw a hotly contested race grow cold assuring
him yet another term in office. Without a filed opponent each will be
re-elected with just one vote in November.
Four other county seats are being contested and all belonging to the
county council. District 1 Councilman Norman Dorn faces a field of
four, one Democrat and three Republicans. Albert Talbert has filed to
challenge Dorn for the Democrat nomination and 20-year Edgefield Town
Councilman Bill Jackson, and two political newcomers Trace Faust and
Jeanette Cockrell have signed on to challenge the seat on the
Republican ticket.
There will almost certainly be a Republican run-off following the June
10 primary on the Republican ticket with three candidates and the
winner of the Democrat ticket will move on to the November General
Election.
District 2 has left incumbent county councilman Everett Kitchens facing
Rodney Ashcraft for the Republican nomination with no Democrat
challenger. The June 10 primary will determine the holder of this seat
long before the November election.
One of the longest serving members of the county council, Chairman
Monroe Kneece, who represents District 3, will face off against a
relatively political newcomer James “Jamie” Rushton Jr. who filed late
on Saturday. Both have told EdgefieldDaily.com they have agreed to run
a clean campaign free of “mudslinging”.
Merriwether incumbent Joel Hudson, who has held the District 5 seat for
eight years, has been challenged by Genia Blackwell, another newcomer
to the political scene. The June 10 primary will also determine who
will fill this seat in the November election.
As the June Primary comes, three of the four challenged county council
seats will be confirmed. Districts 2, 3, and 5; which is a majority of
seats on the county council and the controlling authority, will be
written in stone. The fourth seat of District 1 will be determined
after a run off and finality coming in November.
EdgefieldDaily.com welcomes announcements and press releases from all
candidates during the election process.
