Elderly Woman Targeted by "Insurance Sweepstakes" Scam

web posted April 1, 2014

COUNTY An Edgefield County woman met with an Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy after receiving a check and a letter purporting to be from her current insurance carrier telling her she had won over $42,000 that included a check in the amount of $4,216.08 in the envelope.

The woman took the check and the letter to her local insurance agent who informed her he knew of no such sweepstakes and that she needed to contact law enforcement.

The deputy took the information and made copies of the check and the letter and turned all the information over to the Sheriff's Criminal Investigative Division for further investigation.

Anytime you receive a check or a letter stating you have won a sweepstakes you never entered, you should report the incident to law enforcement as a scam.
