Emergency crews deal with downed trees, limbs, lines on Monday
web
posted April 14, 2009
COUNTY – Weather
related incidents
continued to plague the area Monday after heavy rains and high winds
seemed to weaken a number of trees. As the rains began to subside on
Monday the winds increased and a number of calls to 911 brought
emergency crews to several scenes in Edgefield and Johnston with
reports of trees and power lines down.
Just before 4 pm the first call came in of a tree down that took out
what turned out to be cable and phone lines down on Oak Street in
Edgefield. Within minutes another call of a tree falling on a house on
the 500 block of Mims Street was received.
John and Susan Edwards said they were inside their 500 Mims Street home
when the tree in front of their home fell. “It shook the ground,” Mr.
Edwards said. Luckily the large oak did minimal damage to the home when
it was toppled. “We looked into having it cut down,” Mr. Edwards said,
but the contractor never got back with them before the tree fell.
During the same time
period a homeowner on the 400 block of Bland
Avenue in Johnston reported that a large limb from a massive oak tree
had fallen across their driveway taking down cable lines. The South
Carolina Department of Transportation was in the area and
removed the large limb and debris as it partially entered the roadway.
The forecast for Tuesday includes the possibility of additional rain
but the winds are expected to die down.
