Edgefield County United Way Names New Officers, Allocates Money web posted April 25, 2007 Below: Dean Campbell COUNTY –
At its recent annual Allocation
Meeting, the Edgefield County United Way elected new officers and
decided which agencies would receive funding this year. Dean Campbell,
former Johnston Mayor and local United Way Vice President, was elected
President. Ken Durham, President of the organization for 10
years, was elected Vice President. Ann Adams continues as
Secretary, and Richard Beals remains the Treasurer.Campbell said Durham asked to step down as President because his duties as Edgefield’s Mayor takes up much more of his time. Campbell said that Durham has done a tremendous job running the organization. “Everyone knows Ken is not only a smart guy, but a talented and hard worker,” Campbell said. “If I can do half of what he’s been able to accomplish, I’ll consider my tenure a success.” Campbell added he is looking forward to working with those on the Board and in the community to find news ways to invigorate the United Way campaign. “Many people just don’t realize how important the United Way is in their communities,” Campbell explained. “The agencies we help fund serve local citizens in many ways, from meals for senior citizens to recreational opportunities for young people. The United Way touches almost everyone’s life in some way.” Also at the annual Allocation Meeting, the Board agreed to fund the following agencies for the coming year: • American Red Cross • CSRA Girl Scout Council • Georgia-Carolina Boy Scout Council • Cumbee Center for Abused Persons • Edgefield County Recreation Department • Merriwether Fire Department • Northside Fire Department • Westside Fire Department • Edgefield County Churches Helping Others • Helping Hands, Inc. • MEG’s Shelter for Abused Women • Women in Unity • Johnston Food Bank • United Way of South Carolina/United Way of America Total funding for all the groups will add up to over $81,000, Campbell said. All programs, including those outside Edgefield County, serve Edgefield County citizens, he noted. The United Way of Edgefield County is operated by a Board of volunteers and has almost no administrative cost, so money donated by citizens can go directly to programs and agencies. To contribute to the local United Way, citizens can mail donations to P.O. Box 72, Edgefield, SC, 29824. “Donations are always needed, so I encourage people to give at any time of the year,” Campbell said. “The United Way only works if we all work together.” For
