Some 17-year-olds able to vote in June primary

web posted Apri 26, 2006

COUNTY – Some 17-year-olds may register to vote in the 2006 Primary Election in June if they will turn 18 on, or before, the November 7 General Election. Trish Gordon, of the Edgefield County Voter Registration Office, said in order to vote in the Primary Election they need to register to vote before the May 13, 2006 deadline.

The law allows for the 17 year-olds to vote even though they are not 18 because the Primary Election is part of the nominating process of the General Election. Since the 17-year-olds will be eligible to vote in the General Election, the process is considered one, making them eligible to vote.

Ms. Gordon also wanted to remind Merriwether voters to check their voter’s registration cards to prevent confusion with Merriwether being divided into two voting precincts. “If they have any questions they can call the Voter’s Registration Office,” Ms. Gordon said. Those numbers are 803-637-4072 or 803-637-7154.

Merriwether was divided into two voting precincts last year to alleviate hours long waits to vote. More information and a map
of the precincts can be found here .
