Citizens group seeks investigation of School Superintendent
web
posted April 28, 2009
COUNTY – According to documents obtained
by EdgefieldDaily.com, a citizen’s group is asking for an investigation
of Edgefield County School Superintendent Dr. Crenshaw due to her
association to a grant writing company she founded, M.K. Inc., also
known as Mama’s Kids Inc., that is alleged to have been involved in
grant writing in Edgefield County that benefited the company she
founded and presides as President, according to the documents
discovered.
“Of great concern to the citizens of this County is that Dr. Mary
Rice-Crenshaw is using her position as the Superintendent to direct to
her own company, grant research and/or evaluation services for various
schools in the district to which she has or has had a close working
relationship,” the document obtained read.
Although no formal investigation has been confirmed, the group named as
the complainants is listed as the Edgefield County Citizen Task Force
Against Corruption in Education, with an address of PO Box 312,
Edgefield, SC, 29824.
In a Freedom of Information request
(FOIA) dated April 4, the group
sought documents, which were not available at the time of this report,
for associations regarding Superintendent Dr. Crenshaw under a slew of
aliases and the school district.
“Of great concern to the citizens of this County is that Dr. Mary
Rice-Crenshaw is using her position as the Superintendent to direct to
her own company, grant research and/or evaluation services for various
schools in the district to which she has or has had a close working
relationship. From what we can see, her company also employs
relatives,” one of the documents obtained read.
According to the documents obtained, the group is seeking an
investigation by the State Ethics Commission.
The documents represent only one side of the
complaint.
The names of the two leaders of the group, Jim Jackson of Merriwether -
the owner of a private investigation firm, and Charles Kemp, an
Edgefield business owner, were listed as contact points for the group
according to the documents obtained.
According to the documents obtained by EdgefieldDaily.com, copies were
sent to Mark Sanford, Governor, Secretary of State, South Carolina
Department of Education, State of South Carolina Molly Spearman, South
Carolina Association of School Administrators, The Augusta Chronicle,
The Citizen News, The North Augusta Star, and EdgefieldDaily.com.
