Fishing Rodeo huge success for county youth

web posted May 12, 2008
COUNTY – Though the early morning brought strong storms, lighting, and hail, the skies cleared and the sun shinned upon the Jimmy Shay Memorial Fishing Rodeo Saturday. “I think we might have more people than last year,” Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey said. The event is organized each year by the Edgefield County Law Officers Association and is sponsored by several local businesses and agencies providing an opportunity for youth to “Get hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs”. With hundreds of local youths turning out and the fish biting, it was a grand day for all.

The Fishing Rodeo provided fishing tackle and bait for the youths as they began lining the shoreline of Lick Fork Lake waiting to get a bite. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources overstocks the lake with additional catfish for the event and the fishing could not have been better. Several youths caught from six to twelve catfish, many weighing between two to five pounds. Among them were Garret Hammond and Josh Wates (Left), both of Edgefield, who could not carry their catch without the aid of parents.

After a few hours of fishing parents and children were provided with a free lunch consisting of hot dogs, fixings, chips, and drinks. The Merriwether Fire Department manned the grill cooking well over 1,200 hot dogs. “We’ve got 1,200 hot dogs now,” Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said around 11 am, “but we have more on the way.” Chief Aston said the association was pleased with the turnout and the enthusiasm of the youth. “It’s great to see them have a good time. It’s all about the kids.”

Before the day was over almost 800 attendees had passed through the gate, not counting those who camped out for the event the night before.

And if the fishing and free food was not enough to make their day, the best was still to come as the drawings for free prizes got underway just after noon, including the much anticipated bicycle giveaway. As the time drew near hundreds of children began gathering around the dozens of bicycles pointing to the one they would choose if their number was called.

Among the many lucky winners of a new bike was Durauys Nelson, (above) of Johnston, who took little time making his choice of bikes when his number was called. “I want that one,” Durauys said, pointing to a Mongoose XR-75 off road ten-speed.

Children could also take their turn in a hunting simulator provided by the Department of Natural Resources which allowed them to hone their skills in hunting deer, turkey, quail and other game. The simulator was enjoyed by those young and old.

Chief Aston wanted to point out the event would not be possible without the sponsors. “We really appreciate them and all that they do,” Aston said. In addition to the Edgefield County Law Officers Association, sponsors included the US Forest Service, SC Department of Natural Resources, Quail Unlimited, Log Creek Timber, Mathis Realty, Smith Oil Company, Jim Satcher Ford, Edgefield Fuel and Convenience, Gregg’s Gas Plus, Alex Hamilton Paving, EdgefieldDaily.com, Total Site Containment Company, IGA, the Merriwether Fire Department, and a vast array of volunteers from the Boy Scouts to the Strom Thurmond FFA.

To become a sponsor or to contribute to the annual event contact any of your local law enforcement agencies.
