  Fishing Rodeo big hit with area families web posted May 14, 2007  COUNTY – The
Edgefield County Law
Enforcement Association held its annual Jimmy Shay Memorial Youth
Fishing Rodeo on Saturday with great weather and lots of family fun.
Almost 800 family members turned out for great fishing, free ice cream,
hot dogs, drinks, and the much anticipated bicycle giveaway. The rodeo is presented by the Law Enforcement Association to give area youth a chance to “get hooked on fishing, not on drugs”. All children under the age of 12 were provided free tackle and bait and everyone was given a ticket for the drawing for prizes that was held after lunch. The Merriwether Fire Department cooked 1,500 hot dogs, Pepsi provided free drinks, and Mayfield Ice cream in association with 105.7 FM, The Bull, gave away 800 ice cream bars.  The drawing for
prizes commenced as Jeff Hughes began calling out
numbers and Edgefield County Sheriff’s Adell Dobey handed out fishing
rods, sleeping bags, lanterns, other prizes, and fifteen bicycles to
the winners. Logan Tudor, of North Augusta was one of the proud winners
of a new bike (Pictured left). Clay Price was awarded a trophy for the
largest fish
caught, a 4 pound 3 once catfish.Among the many sponsors were the Merriwether Fire Department, US Forestry Service, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Pepsi, Smith Oil, Quail Unlimited, Eaves Oil and Propane, Jim Satcher Ford, Alex Hamilton Paving, Mathis Realty, Monk’s Corner, Edgefield Fuel and Convenience, Log Creek Timber, Johnston IGA, others, including area law enforcement agencies.
