Two men arrested after allegedly passing fake $100 bill

web posted May 22, 2009
COUNTY – Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested two men accused of trying to pass counterfeit money at two local stores Thursday evening. The two men, initially described only as a white male and a black male, first tried to pass a fake $100 at the old Barton’s Store at the top of the four-lane section of Highway 25. Having no success, they headed southbound and tried again at the J&L Market, and that is where their luck ran out.

The Sheriff’s Office was contacted and the owner of the J&L Market followed the gold 2003 Dodge Stratus the men were driving as deputies began converging on the area. That is when the two men were reportedly found turning into the Sonic Drive-In near I-20 and were detained by Sheriff’s Deputies. North Augusta Police were also summoned to the scene as the men were now located in the city limits.

The investigation led to Keith Bert Brand, 24, and Christopher M. Morgan, 21, of Richmond County, being taken into custody and their car being towed but not impounded. Both men were transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center and booked on custody holds until formal charges are filed sometime Friday.

No additional suspected counterfeit bills were found in the car or on either of the two men at the time of the arrest.

The investigation is ongoing and early indications are there could be additional suspects involved in the counterfeit money scheme. The case has already been turned over to the Investigative Division of the Sheriff’s Office, and as usual in such cases, Federal authorities are notified of the investigation.

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Richmond County authorities about an ongoing investigation there earlier this week. It remains unconfirmed if the two investigations could be related.

Brand and Morgan were still in the booking process at press time so no booking photos were available.
