Couple discovers being victim of burglary days later

web posted May 22, 2009
COUNTY – Late Wednesday night a Long Cane Road couple called the Sheriff’s Office to report a burglary to their home with a pistol and cash being taken. Unfortunately for investigators, the call came at least three days after the crime had taken place and made collecting evidence virtually impossible. The couple went out of town last weekend and returned on Sunday. They noticed the metal around the doorknob was bent but gave it little concern when they arrived home.

Everything seemed to be normal and in its place and they proceeded to unpack and go about their normal activities, incident reports state. The bent metal around the doorknob was fixed and it wasn’t until the couple spoke with their son-in-law that they began taking a closer look around the house and discovered the cash and a pistol was missing from a drawer in the bedroom.

The pistol was described only as a .22 caliber revolver. The case has been added to the long and every growing list of recent burglaries across the county that is currently under investigation.

The majority of the recent burglaries is found in the Merriwether area but has recently spread into the Westide section of the county. Largely ignored due to the growing number of actual burglaries are the thefts occurring where no burglary takes place and valuables left on porches or around the home are stolen without having to gain entry into a home or building. These crimes are listed as a “larceny” or “grand larceny”, not a burglary, and in some cases can exceed the value of items stolen from inside a home that was burglarized.
