Elderly Merriwether woman reports attempted lottery fraud

web posted May 28, 2009
COUNTY – Even though economic times may be a little tight, scammers are still out on the prowl even in Edgefield County. A 76-year-old Merriwether woman called the Sheriff’s Office to report a possible, if not certain, fraud attempt. The woman said she received a phone call on Tuesday afternoon from a man claiming to be from Global Lottery informing her she had been selected to win $4.5 million and a Mercedes. In order to claim the prizes the woman needed to send $1,320 by Western Union to pay for the taxes. The man continued to call and the last woman he spoke with happened to be an Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputy.

According to the incident reports, the man, claiming to be a “John Clark” of Global Lottery in Montego Bay New York, requested the $1,320 and when the elderly woman said she did not have that much he reduced the amount to $450. After she hung up the phone she called the Sheriff’s Office.

A short time later a female deputy arrived and while taking the report the man called back again, this time the deputy took the call. The man, who was described as having a “Middle Eastern accent”, told the deputy he was an FBI agent. When the deputy began questioning the purpose of the call the man replied “F-you” and hung up.

The case has been turned over to the Investigative Division for further investigation.

EdgefieldDaily.com called the number on the report several times on Wednesday and continued to receive a busy signal until later in the evening when a man finally did answer. When the man answering the phone “hello”, we asked to speak to “John Clark” and the man stated he was Mr. Clark. We inquired if this was Global Lottery and he confirmed it was. When asked what Global Lottery did he stated they handed out lottery winnings.

As we began asking additional questions “Mr. Clark” then asked who was calling. We gave a fictional name and without hesitation “Mr. Clark” stated that he had already checked their records and he had no prizes for the name given. We tried to inquire further about the company and the call was disconnected.

Law Enforcement advises that lottery winners are not required to pay any taxes for winnings. Any taxes due from a lottery are taken out of the winnings and the winner receives the remaining prize money. If you receive such calls you are asked to report them to your local law enforcement agency.

Never give out your personal information and never send anyone cash money in order to receive a “prize”.

The number listed on the report for Global Lottery was 876-409-1617. It did not appear in any listings on internet searches or phone listings.
