Memorial Day: from those who served

web reposted May 31, 2010
COUNTY – With America honoring those who served today, Edgefield Daily asked serveral local veterans; What does Memorial Day mean to you?

Jerry Garvin, 101st Airborne Viet Nam 1970-71 “It’s a day that I reflect on men like my father (Leonard Garvin) who was a B-17 pilot in WWll, his brother who was a Marine in Iwo Jima, my uncle and his brother, Wesley Garvin, who was killed in the Pacific Theater. And, it is a time I remember friends I served with in Viet Nam.” (Editor’s note: Mr. Garvin is a recipient of the Purple Heart though he did not inform us of this distinction.)

Ray Salerno, US Army 1959- 73, US Army Reserves 1973-83, “It is a day of reminiscing of people I knew who are no longer with me because of their sacrifice.” (Editor’s note: Mr. Salerno is a recipient of the Purple Heart though he did not inform us of this distinction.)

Arland Finley, US Army, Korea 1951-52, “My thoughts are for the families who lost loved ones, mothers, fathers, wives, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters. I am thankful for those who survived and thank them for their dedication and I’m thankful for those who serve today.”

Lewis "Rab" Black, US Army, Viet Nam 1964-66, "It is to honor the men and women that gave their life in defense of our country, the ultimate sacrifice."

Henry Reese, US Navy 1956-63, “It is a time to pause to remember our military personnel who give their time, their health, and sometimes their lives to defend our country and provide and maintain freedom for our country.”

James Beasley (Now deceased), US Army Viet Nam 1969-70, “My thoughts are on my classmates who went in with me and served with me who never came back. I came back; they came back in a pine box. These guys will never grow old in my mind, and that is what I think about.”

Joel Bridges, US Army 1962-63, “I think about the people who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice. The Viet Nam boys served without question and didn’t get the credit. I think about that.”

Edgefield Daily.com would also like to recognize the following veterans who have since passed:

Verdy D. Blackwell, US Air Force Reserve Pilot, Korea

Epps J. Adams Jr., US Army, North Africa, Italy WWll

Epps J. Adams Sr., US Calvary Mexican-American War, US Army WWl
