COUNTY – Warm weather, the end of the school year, Memorial Day, each one

You didn’t’ get behind the wheel of a car without proper instruction, yet each year thousands of people operate a boat without a prior instruction or formal training.

This weekend saw 12 persons take a step toward being a safe boater; they completed “About Boating Safely” a 7 hour course taught by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Topics include maritime rules, Georgia and South Carolina regulations, how to prevent emergencies, docking, cruising tips, anchoring, towing a boat, navigation, personal
watercraft operation and how to tie basic knots.  Completion of the course, satisfies both Georgia and South Carolina requirements, each student will receive a nationally recognized lifetime certificate. Many insurance companies offer a discount on
boat insurance to certificate holders.

Additional classes will be offered the last Saturday each month from June through the end of September at the J Strom Thurmond Visitors Center, located at the Dam
on the SC side of the river.

The cost of the course is $35 per person or $50 Family and includes instruction, handouts and text book. The class is provided by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Army Corps of Engineers.
